Oxfam

Oxfam was a charity set up in 1942 to provide relief for Greek civilians during World War 2.   Oxfam say "We’ve always been rather vocal about ending poverty. We’ve taken on governments, international organisations and corporations. We took out ads in the 50s (unprecedented!), defied restrictions by helping the people of Cambodia in ’79 (groundbreaking!), and harassed numerous G8 conferences (ongoing!)".  Today, Oxfam deals with Global crisis such as the one in Somalia, where Oxfam and its local partners are providing lifesaving assistance to families struggling in the face of famine and conflict.

Oxfam have pioneered lots of new fundraising ideas in their time and in 2006 they began 'Oxjam' - the biggest music festival in the country right now.  Oxjam is a series of musical events/gigs which take place throughout October, organised by local people/artists/bands/musicians to raise money for Oxfam.  Secrets of the Boudoir Burlesque decided to get involved with this festival this year, and, like Oxfam, we have decided to think outside of the box and hold a burlesque event, rather than a band/gig/musical event to raise money.  We have decided to combine twirling tassles and collection tins to shake up some money for this wonderful charity.

With our biggest raffle to date and a record number of performers from outside of Sheffield, this show promises to be rather spectacular.  We have a garden of Eden, feathers, fans, champagne and Charlie Chaplin!  That's right - Charlie Chaplin!

Danni La Blue as Charlie Chaplin

So come along to West Street Live on Sunday the 16th of October and join in the fun, friskiness and fundraising!  The price of your advance admission (£6) can buy school dinners for 100 children living in developing countries, so what are you waiting for? www.secretsoftheboudoirburlesque.com

Do You Need Further Proof of the Fantastic work Oxfam Does?

Sierra Leone is a West African country with a population of 6 million and is one of the least developed countries in the World.
45% of the population are children.
1 in 3 will die before the age of 5.
In the poorest area of the country only 40% have access to clean water and only 13% have access to a toilet.
Oxfam help by setting up a Community Hygiene Group:
They identify the best place to put a water pump.
They train the community to use it.
Then allow the villagers to build the latrines that Oxfam donates.
They teach hygiene to the community and build drying racks and washing lines.

£12 (two tickets to our Oxjam event) can buy a Hygiene Kit for one family.
£50 (25 raffle tickets for our Oxjam event) can buy materials to build clean toilets.
£3,000 can provide one well to provide clean water for one village.

So please, purchase your admission to a fabulous variety show today and donate to Oxfam.

Burlesque and Vintage Events in October

Hello darlings,

And welcome to the dark and cold month of October...

To keep you warm during this Autumn month we have a few little burlesque events to tide you over until the next Secrets of the Boudoir Burlesque show which will be on the 5th December 2010.

The biggest event this month comes from SotBB's sister company 'Alluring Delights' who have ventured into the theatre to bring you a burlesque show filled with thrills and chills!  Make sure that you are nowhere else this Halloween as this will be a show to remember!  Come to The Library Theatre in Sheffield dressed in your best, your most horrific or your most terrifying and prepare to be taken on journey through "all things dark, weird, wonderful and sexy" on "a Hallows Eve that will not soon be forgotten".

Featuring SotBB's very own compere Mr. Warren Peace and a bucket load of your favourite SotBB performers....plus some new ones...this show takes you on a journey through Alison Wonder (played by Deadly Nightshade) and Little Cherry Red's (played by Cherry Du Bois) nightmares as their dreams begin to become real in this burlesque nightmare!  To find out more and to book your tickets, please visit http://www.alluringdelights.co.uk/.

If you are searching for something kitsch to wear during this cold month or you would like to find the perfect vintage outfit to parade around in at Alluring Delights' 'Halloween Thriller' then why not visit 'The Vintage Fair'?  This month the fair takes place in Leicestershire but will return to Sheffield very soon.  Whilst you are there you can wave 'hello' to Deadly Nightshade who is resident promo and pin up girl along with Lola Valentine who performed at the first ever SotBB show!

Taking place on the 9th October is Emily Strange's Oxjam Jim Jam which is a charity event featuring Warren Peace, Deadly Nightshade, Cherry Du Bois and Depravity Jane amongst a whole host of other performers and musicians.  This event takes place in 'Penelope's' under the Odeon and is sure to be a good 'un.

Also, this month, when you find time to sit and chill out in a big cardigan with a hot drink, why not pick up your free copy of 'Toast' magazine and take a glimpse inside at the review of 'Secrets of the Boudoir Burlesque Falls in Love' written by Sofire Rosa?  You can also find us in online burlesque magazine 'Debased' this month too.  Ooooh goody!  We get about a bit!

Much love,
...And Happy Halloween!
